Dipnetting Fish Creek YouTube Video
While we weren’t able to do as much videoing as we had hoped just based on the sheer work this activity requires, we hope that this brief YouTube video will give you a little taste for dipnetting off of the banks of Fish Creek. We got a lot of fish…we also were covered in mud. This is NOT an activity that we recommend for young kids. However, we adults had an absolute blast and would do it again. Although, the next time we would probably come with a canoe or small boat. You’ll see why!

Why Dipnetting Fish Creek is Such an Adventure
So there is an easy way to dipnet Fish Creek. And there is the hard way. We took the hard way. The hard way is to walk up the banks of the water toward the mouth of Fish Creek. This is no small hike when you are carrying coolers and dipnets through the thick mud. And if you think it is hard carrying the gear IN…well…. Just wait till you have to carry it and a large load of salmon back out! Please note this is not a complaint. It was absolutely hard work, but we had a blast and would absolutely not trade this experience.
Once you get to the mouth of the creek (where we had learned from locals was the best place to fish), you have to work through the mud to pull the fish in and out. As you can see in our video, we were COVERED in mud. But it was worth it and so much fun.
Walking back out was even harder. At one point in time, I fell and got so stuck in the mud I could not get back up. Ben had to come help me up before we could continue our trek back to the truck.
Now the EASIER way to dipnet fish creek is to take a canoe or small boat (or borrow one from a friend) and then paddle down the creek to the mouth and dipnet from there. This is not only the easier option, but it is also the cleaner option. It also looked like there was a slightly better chance of catching fish when you were in the middle of the creek.
Dipnetting is a privilege for Alaskan residents only, and there are some strict rules regarding it. So if you are looking to dipnet, please make sure you are following the Alaska Fish and Game regulations. They aren’t hard, but it is important to follow the guidelines. If you aren’t an Alaskan resident, unfortunately this fishing activity is not for you. HOWEVER, you should absolutely watch our video to learn more about it. Because it is an experience like none other!
