Tolsona Wilderness Campground
The Tolsona Wilderness Campground is an amazing family run campground. It is beautiful, spacious, well equipped and the perfect place to stay if you are wanting to experience the mud volcanoes. The owners are the most helpful and friendly individuals who truly care for their campers. They provide many different activities to make camping fun for both adults and children throughout the summer.
We were situated pleasantly right along the creek which was perfect for fishing and safely splashing the water with our younger kids. The hookups worked flawlessly, and it was a real treat to actually have electricity while camping since we usually boondock. The campground was quiet, and it was the perfect place to ride bikes and just enjoy some Alaskan wilderness in cushy comfort.
Tolsona Mud Volcanoes
On one of the days that we were at the campground, we walked up to the Tolsona Mud Volcanoes. While it was not a very long hike, it was definitely a more intense bush-whacking type trail that cut through multiple marshes. On top of this, the hike had a fairly consistent incline.
We hiked this trail with some friends, so in all we had 5 children between the ages of 3 and 8. All of the kids did excellently, so we definitely encourage these observations to not deter other families who have children from hiking the trail. As long as the kids are decent hikers, we believe this trail to be a family-friendly trail. The kids had a blast acting like they were explorers in the middle of the forest – which is actually exactly what they were!
One thing I will mention is long sleeves and mosquito repellent is an absolute must! Because the trail goes through both forest and marsh, there are a multitude of mosquitoes and we were very grateful that we had both.
Once we got to the top of the Tolsona Mud Volcanoes trail, it was like walking into a different world. After walking through the treed hillside, we were suddenly at a mud flat that looked like the surface of the moon (or how I sort of envision the surface of the moon, that is!). The mud volcanoes are very deep (we were pulling large trees out of the holes) so it is key to keep an eye on your dogs and kids and to establish safety rules. But other than that, it was absolutely fascinating to explore and look around. We also found a multitude of bear, moose, and caribou tracks around the mud flats.
