Nestled down a road leading into residential neighborhoods, you will notice a small parking lot off to the side. This little parking lot leads to a charming trail that takes you out into the Palmer Hay Flats. It is called the Wasilla Creek Trail. This boardwalk gives you beautiful views of Pioneer Peak while following along with a gorgeous bubbling creek.
Wasilla Creek Trail
Located at 5990 E Nelson Road in Wasilla, Wasilla Creek Trail is more of a boardwalk than a trail. While the first tiny bit of the trail is dirt, it rapidly turns into a manmade boardwalk over the swampy lands. The first half of the walkway is wood planks and the second half is a metal. Our kids love stomping along the path making it nice and loud, a great deterrent for any of the larger more intimidating wildlife. The boardwalk follows a portion of Wasilla Creek which makes for a relaxing setting on your outing. The majority the boardwalk runs through the woods, but it then punches out into the Palmer Hay Flats. This is a particularly gorgeous view, with the gorgeous grass giving way to the spectacular Pioneer Peak.
How Is It For Kids?
Wasilla Creek Trail is a perfect path for kids. It’s flat, easy to follow, and not that long. The only possible concern is kids falling off the side of the boardwalk which is about 1-3 feet off the ground, depending on the location. I will freely admit a child (or two) of ours has been running along and run right off the boardwalk as there is no railing. They’ve always been a bit surprised but not hurt and it’s been a good lesson on paying attention to our surroundings. If you are into searching for geocaches, there are couple in this area as well.
Wild Roses & Wildlife
Once the warm weather comes, if you walk along this path you will be delighted to find bushes filled with wild roses. They are absolutely amazing to smell and gorgeous to look at. My daughter called Wasilla Creek Trail the “walk of roses” last summer. Wasilla Creek Trail is also a perfect place for some low-key wildlife viewing. You can often see ducks on the creek and moose out in the flats. I’d say about half of the times that we’ve gone on this trail we’ve seen some moose in the distance. You can see other little birds in the area, as well – such as woodpeckers. Our kids never tire from looking for the little birds out and about.
Beautiful Views for Little Effort
If you are looking for some beautiful views while expending minimal effort, Wasilla Creek Trail is the perfect option for you. You can easily do a roundtrip walk on this boardwalk in 30-60 minutes depending on your pace – even with kids. We tend to frequent this little trail often throughout the year, so if you want to see more pictures of this trail during different seasons, be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook!
