Sleep. It’s one of the most important yet often elusive health habits in our lives. It’s what recharges us and allows our bodies to heal and recover from whatever craziness we’ve put ourselves through. Yet with increased stress, less exercise, more screen time, and a multitude of other factors, many people struggle to get adequate sleep. In Alaska summer, we also often struggle to sleep because it never gets dark. Studies have shown that the use of essential oils have helped promote sleep. So what are some of my favorite essential oils for sleep support?
My all time favorite essential oils for sleep helps relax my body. This is the Young Living blend, Peace and Calming II. Please note that when I say an oil might help me sleep, I am not saying it is like a sleeping pill. I often use this oil to help me feel calm in the midst of a busy day, but it doesn’t knock me out or make me non-functional. But because it calms my mind and helps me relax, it naturally leads me to be able to fall asleep when I am ready.
Gentle Baby is another one of my favorite essential oils for sleep deprived and tired kids. It also is one of my favorite scents from Young Living. It’s gentle, calming, and slightly sweet. I keep rollers of this on hand, and every night before bedtime roll it on my children. The Gentle Baby blend has been used like this in my home since my children were infants and it is so effective. I think it is now a happy and familiar routine and scent, as well, so it calms them in that way too. If my children are struggling with meltdowns, I also use this roller to calm them!
One of my favorite diffuser blends for at night is 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Cedarwood, and 1 drop Copaiba. Its gentle smell is perfect for both kids and adults and it quietly wafts you off to sleep. I generally run this in my kids’ diffuser for 30-60minutes at bedtime. It’s also great for keeping their room smelling fresh during the winter when it’s hard to have their window open much due to freezing Alaskan temperatures. For all of these reasons it definitely ranks as one of my favorite essential oil combinations for sleep. Lavender essential oil can work well for sleep all on its own if that’s what you have. Lavender is one of the oils in the premium starter kit, so if you are new, this is a perfect way to start!
Vetiver is a great oil to help slow your mind for racing, while Roman Chamomile is a very calm, relaxing oil. I use Vetiver or a Vetiver blend on my children to help them focus instead of have their mind racing everywhere. So if your mind simply will not stop and let you sleep, this may be a perfect blend for you. Its smell does take a while for some people to get used to, but its rewards are worth the adjustment!
I love the fresh smell of Bergamot. It became one of my favorite oil scents the moment I opened it. Bergamot has been shown in studies to promote sleep. StressAway is a blend of oils, and includes Vanilla, Cedarwood, and Lavender. All of these oils promote calm and relaxation which are vital to help your body sleep. This is a very pleasant essential oil combination for sleep and scent. StressAway is also found in the premium starter kit, so this is another great way to start quickly utilizing your essential oils in a practical form immediately!
There are many different essential oils for sleep support, but all of them are a lovely addition to the end of your day. Everyone has a slightly different response to oils so it is possible that one of these will work significantly better than another to help promote sleep. But hopefully this gives you a start to experiment, play, and find which blends you love to bring you that amazing, restful night of sleep.
