Oh, you’re part of a MLM. Oh….you are one of THOSE people…. There’s a lot of talk in this day and age about equality. About treating people kindly. About seeing people for themselves instead of for others who may have SOME similarities to them. But in my experience, a lot of that gets thrown out the window for a group of people that I am a part of. Let me introduce myself.
Who I Am
Hi, I’m Sarah, and I am part of an MLM – a multi-level marketing company. I run my own business with my husband. We work super hard to have honest interactions with potential clients and focus first and foremost on relationships. Our goal is always to see the person, whether they want our product or not. And I am right now saying I am crazy proud of this whole business we are building, even though in the past I have been scared to talk about it…because on what OTHERS may or may not think about me.
Who I am NOT
Things we do NOT do as part of an MLM:
1. Sales-y tactics. Like our product? AWESOME. Not ready for it? That’s cool. You can be our friend either way. I’m not going to buddy up to you for a while to see if you want to buy my product and then leave you in the ditch if you don’t. I’m not going to cold message you and I’m not going to randomly add you to groups without your permission. Have some people done that? Absolutely. Do the majority of the people I know who actually take their business SERIOUSLY as a job do that? No.
2. A pyramid scheme. For anything to qualify as a pyramid scheme that means that a person who starts underneath another person can never surpass the person above them. Nope nope nope. I can’t tell you the number of people who have surpassed someone who started out ahead of them because they worked hard to do so.
Anything Good Can Be Turned Bad
Here’s the thing, you can take any good thing and make it slimy. There are bad doctors, bad lawyers, bad coaches, bad counselors, bad bankers, bad pastors, bad painters. You name it, you can make it bad. But when you hear any of those jobs you generally speaking don’t associate them negatively based on the job. You evaluate each individual person.
The same goes for being part of an MLM businesses. The MLM genre of jobs are incredible. They provide so much freedom for many people who do the job well and treat it as a real job. But there are some people who put a bad taste in your mouth based on how THEY run it.
Support Your Friends!
So next time you hear a friend is jumping into being part of an MLM, would you do me a huge favor? Support them. It doesn’t mean that you have to buy their product. But encourage them and encourage them to do it well! If you see a post, let them know that you see their effort. I promise you that they will be appreciative. Head over to our Instagram page and give a shoutout to your favorite person who works in the MLM industry so we can support each other! (You can totally nominate yourself if you are looking for support!!)
