For centuries, ancient medicine greatly believed that there was a strong mind-body connection. In other words, that mental thoughts or emotions could effect the way your body physically feels. Then came the discovery of bacteria and viruses. While these absolutely play a gigantic role in how people feel and illnesses that we encounter, doctors abandoned the understanding that your mental health could play a role on your physical health. In the last few decades, doctors are beginning to understand the balanced approach. That yes, illness is absolutely acquired through viruses, bacteria, diseases, and genetics. But that your mental health can also change the way you feel and give you negative physical symptoms. This is the mind-body connection. I want to share with you a little bit of my story, as well as tell you why this is important. As well as how Alaska played a key role in helping me with this.
I’ve had some people tell me, “Well, your life has always been perfect.” But the reality is that no one’s life is perfect. I’ve struggled with severe anxiety and panic attacks during my life. It was horrible. During that time I was also often ill, and I never felt good. I was exhausted, often got sick, and had many weird, unexplainable physical symptoms. Now there were other things going, and if you have concerns you should always always go see a doctor (I did this on multiple occasions!). But what really started helping me feel better – both mentally and physically – was when I started taking care of my mind and body. And most of that happened when I moved to Alaska and gained the drive to explore and began to experience nature on a more consistent basis.
Life Can Be Stressful
No matter where you are in life, you have stress. It could be the stress of running late in the morning, the stress of a project at work, the stress of the grief of a loved one, or the stress of a cross-country move. Some of those are little stressors, others are hard. But stress takes a huge role in our life. During these times people may suffer from tension in the shoulders, lack of appetite, insomnia, headaches, and other physical symptoms. All of these are pretty well accepted. But it can also effect you in other ways. It can make you dizzy, your heart race, random aches and pains to pop up, or full on panic attacks to hit. It can also effect your blood pressure and heart health among other things.
Research has been done that shows that the human body has a specific frequency. The frequency can reveal health, or it could show the presence of stress which can transition to illness. The healthy human body presents a frequency of about 62 to 68 Hz. As the frequency drops, different severity of illnesses strike – from colds all the way down to cancer. If you can find ways to introduce your body to higher frequency levels – be it fresh produce or essential oils – this will help your body fight stress and keep your body in healthier frequency levels. Many essential oils have high frequencies which may help your body handle stress better and provide emotional support. (Essential oils should never be promoted as healing, but they are wonderful support tools!)
Improving Your Mental State
Besides eating healthy and using essential oils to raise your frequency, it is also important to improve your mental state. And this is where Alaska came in. My mental state is best improved when I’m outside enjoying nature. What better place to do this than Alaska?! It is amazing and beautiful. It very much helped me improve my outlook on life, as well as gave me a greater drive for getting outside of my house! This has a positive effect on my mind-body connection. There are many ways that you can do this, as well, and I want to include a short list of ideas.
- Incorporate relaxation and meditation into your day to day life. Do not always feel the need to be eternally busy.
- Exercise. We can be a very sedentary culture. Move and set a change of pace.
- Get outside. We weren’t meant to be always within 4 walls. We need nature and fresh air.
- Find things that you enjoy. Read. Find a hobby. Do something that refreshes your mind that you genuinely enjoy.
- Work to improve your mental though process. Be grateful and seek to find things to be grateful for even on the hard days.
- Get a proper amount of sleep. Enough said.
- Learn to laugh more.
- Forgive yourself and others.
The Mind-Body Connection
These are just some basic steps for beginning to improve the mind-body connection and a very basic outline of what the mind-body connection it. It is a complicated and fascinating subject that you should absolutely research more on your own. But in the meantime, simply be aware of the fact that it exists and it matters. So take time to invest in yourself – improve your mental state. This will be so beneficial to improving your mind-body connection.
